That's a good point. I know in some cases, people are made to believe they've been in that world the entire time... and in others, it adapts to us being there, even if we know something's not right.

We got there after Nodd faked his death to escape that same school, and apparently the way us three escaped wasn't the same thing he had done.
If anything I think it's...more like we're all being forced to be part of each other's worlds for a time, no matter how badly we fit in.
